Shopify Barcode vs SKU in CSV: Do Not Mix Product Identifiers

A SKU is typically an internal inventory identifier chosen by a merchant or supplier. A barcode field may represent a standardized identifier used by scanners and marketplaces. Both can look numeric, but they serve different functions and should never be silently copied into one another.

Example: why this problem happens

A supplier spreadsheet provides a 13-digit EAN number and a separate stock code WIDG-BLK-L. If both are mapped to Shopify SKU because they are 'item identifiers', internal reconciliation and scan workflows may break.

Step-by-step: what to do

  1. Inspect supplier documentation to learn which fields identify sellable variants versus barcode standards.
  2. Keep all identifiers as strings rather than numbers, preserving leading zeros and punctuation.
  3. Map the vendor's stock code to the appropriate merchant SKU only if it uniquely represents the desired inventory item.
  4. Map a barcode only when the supplier confirms its type and validity. Do not generate plausible-looking standardized barcodes from SKUs.
  5. Run a duplicate SKU report to check repeated stock codes; barcode validation requires separate logic not provided by our current tools.
  6. Before importing, test scanning and marketplace listings against the intended identifier values.
Important limitation

SellerFile Studio's initial supplier converter intentionally does not automatically map or validate standardized barcode fields. Do not assume a correct-looking number is a verified GTIN.

Can our free tools help?

Try with your own file: Shopify product CSV checker, supplier CSV converter, or duplicate SKU finder. The tools are free, local to the browser and do not update your Shopify store.

Common question

Can a SKU be the same as a barcode?

They can coincide by business choice, but treat them as separate fields with different validation rules unless you have confirmed the supplier's identifier policy.
