Fix Shopify CSV Illegal Quoting Errors: Line-by-Line Diagnosis
An “illegal quoting on line” import message is a file-structure problem, not a product-pricing problem. The CSV parser cannot confidently distinguish literal quotation marks from delimiters that mark the start and end of a field. Before modifying product records, locate the broken CSV record and reproduce the failure on a copy.
Example: why this problem happens
A product description exported from a supplier contains the phrase 12" cotton tote, commas, and a paragraph break. A spreadsheet viewer appears to show one cell, but a text editor reveals an unescaped quotation mark in the source CSV.
Diagnose the issue
| Input | Why it matters | Safer example |
|---|---|---|
"Organic "cotton" tote" | Quotes inside a quoted field close the field prematurely. | "Organic ""cotton"" tote" |
12" bag | A bare quote may trigger a strict parser. | Avoid ambiguous formatting, or export with correct CSV quoting. |
| Quoted description with comma | A comma inside a quoted field is data, not a column break. | "Soft, washable fabric" |
Step-by-step: what to do
- Make a backup. Open the downloaded CSV in a UTF-8 capable text editor to inspect the actual quote characters; do not rely solely on how a spreadsheet viewer displays cells.
- Locate the row number reported by Shopify. If your description contains embedded newlines, a physical text line may not equal one CSV record. Inspect the surrounding record boundaries.
- CSV quoting uses pairs of double quotes to represent a literal quote inside a quoted field. Fix the exporter or the source cell instead of stripping all quotation marks blindly.
- Re-export using UTF-8 CSV and upload a tiny file containing the affected product to test parsing before importing all products.
Never replace every comma or quote globally. Doing so can corrupt the intended product title, HTML description, tags, and image URL alignment. A one-column shift can silently put prices or SKUs in the wrong fields.

Common question
Will replacing the delimiter fix illegal quoting?
Not necessarily. Delimiter detection and quote escaping are different rules. Inspect the actual data boundaries first.
