Shopify CSV Price Format Errors: Decimal, Currency and Compare-at
A price column is intended to contain a numeric amount—not a styled currency string. Supplier spreadsheets often include symbols, localized decimal separators or wholesale costs. A CSV importer may interpret these incorrectly, so separate conversion formatting from commercial pricing decisions.
Example: why this problem happens
A supplier publishes €1.234,50 in a European-locale price field. A store expects an amount such as 1234.50 for its currency context. Blindly stripping the punctuation could turn the amount into 1.23450 or 123450.
Diagnose the issue
| Source value | Potential problem | Review action |
|---|---|---|
$19.99 USD | Contains symbols and text | Normalize only after identifying currency. |
19,99 | Comma may be a field delimiter | Identify localized decimal format and properly quote fields. |
1,299.00 | Thousands separator conflicts with CSV comma | Parse under known locale, then output a numeric amount. |
0.00 | Possibly valid but commercially wrong | Verify supplier intended a free product. |
Step-by-step: what to do
- Confirm whether the input price represents retail selling price, wholesale cost or a promotional compare-at price.
- Determine currency and locale explicitly. CSV syntax and currency formatting are separate concepts.
- Convert the business amount into the store's intended currency and decimal style, then compare a few results manually.
- Review compare-at pricing separately; a number can be syntactically valid yet misleading or inconsistent with the selling price.
- Use our Shopify CSV checker to flag nonnumeric price strings, but do not assume it can safely infer a customer's intended financial value.
The current checker warns about invalid Price formatting but does not perform FX conversion or infer the correct retail margin. An incorrect price may import without a parser error.

Common question
Will the CSV checker automatically replace 19,99 with 19.99?
No. It does not guess locale or currency. Correct the value against the source data first.
