Shopify CSV Status Values: Active, Draft, Archived and Publication
A structurally valid product can still be incorrect for a storefront if it goes live too early. Shopify product CSVs can contain Status values such as active, draft and archived. A status field does not replace review of the store's sales-channel publication state.
Example: why this problem happens
A supplier file contains a status value like ACTIVE or Ready. The merchant assumes it is a Shopify import command, then wonders why a product is unexpectedly visible or not available for sale.
Diagnose the issue
| Value | Intended meaning | Verify |
|---|---|---|
active | Product is active | Check intended sales-channel availability. |
draft | Product is not ready for sale | Review pricing, images and variants before activation. |
archived | Product is not actively merchandised | Ensure this is not a newly imported product you intended to sell. |
Ready | Not a standard documented Status value | Map to an intentional state before import. |
Step-by-step: what to do
- Decide which new products should remain drafts until catalog QA is complete.
- Inspect the Status column and distinguish it from any vendor-defined workflow state such as 'ready for warehouse'.
- If necessary, use the CSV checker to flag unsupported values; it may normalize case for recognized status values.
- Perform a small product import, then verify both Status and sales-channel publication in the store's admin.
- Only publish after checking images, variant options, selling prices and inventory behavior.
Automatic status normalization is not a substitute for a merchant's publishing decision. Our tool does not connect to Shopify admin or change publication directly.

Common question
Does active always mean visible in all sales channels?
No. Product status and sales-channel availability are distinct concepts; inspect the actual store publishing configuration.
