How to Split a Large Shopify Product CSV Without Breaking Variants
Splitting a product CSV by every 5,000 text lines is tempting, but dangerous when rows for one product, its variants and additional images span the split boundary. A safe batch is based on complete products, not arbitrary line counts.
Example: why this problem happens
A product has six variant rows sharing one URL handle. A spreadsheet exporter divides the file halfway through that handle group. Batch two begins with rows that lack the context needed by the importer.
Diagnose the issue
| Naive approach | Why it fails | Safer approach |
|---|---|---|
| Every N lines | May split product/variant groups | Group and partition by URL handle. |
| Sort entire CSV arbitrarily | May separate product image rows | Preserve related image-row order. |
| Repeat a new header only on the first file | Later chunks are not self-contained | Include the correct header in every chunk. |
Step-by-step: what to do
- Export a backup. Estimate file size in bytes and confirm Shopify's current import size rules rather than using row count alone.
- Sort or group by product handle in a way that preserves each product's complete variant and image records. Avoid unrelated spreadsheet re-sorting when it would break associations.
- Write each group to exactly one output batch. Repeat the valid header row on every resulting CSV.
- Ensure each batch uses the same quoting and UTF-8 encoding as the original. Check duplicate SKUs across the full dataset, not only within each batch.
- Import a small representative batch and inspect products, variants and images before continuing.
SellerFile Studio currently limits file processing to 10 MB/25,000 rows and does not yet implement safe split-by-handle export. This is a manual procedure, not a claim that our converter performs multi-file partitioning.

Common question
Can I just split the file into equal numbers of rows?
Only if each boundary coincides with a complete product group and all dependent records are preserved. Equal row counts do not guarantee that.
