Shopify CSV Option1 Dependencies: Avoid Losing Existing Variants
A CSV import can parse successfully yet produce unwanted variant changes. Shopify's product CSV documentation warns that changing certain variant-related columns while omitting dependent option information can recreate or delete variant records. The safest response is to identify all dependent columns before making even a small SKU update.
Example: why this problem happens
A merchant edits the SKU column on a product with Size and Color variants but exports a file missing Option1 name and Option1 value. The new file contains valid SKU strings; it does not necessarily identify the original variants.
Diagnose the issue
| File field | Purpose | What to review |
|---|---|---|
| URL handle | Groups rows under a product | Does this identify the existing product? |
| Option1 name/value | Identifies an option dimension and its variant value | Were values omitted during a variant update? |
| Option2/Option3 values | Additional dimensions where used | Does each row have the correct combination? |
| SKU | Merchant's inventory identifier | Does it belong to the variant identified by those options? |
Step-by-step: what to do
- Export the complete existing product records, not just a SKU column and a guessed product handle.
- Preserve all option names and values used by the product in the target store. Verify the full combination against each intended SKU.
- Compare the edited CSV to the original export to see whether any option or handle fields disappeared or changed.
- Use our CSV checker for missing dependencies and duplicate SKU flags, then manually check whether repeated handle rows have unique option combinations.
- Import only a small test set, then verify each surviving variant's identifier, stock behavior, pricing and attached images.
Never apply a blanket 'fix' that changes every option value to Default Title. That can collapse distinct variants. The current beta tool flags some option issues but does not safely reconstruct complex option sets.

Common question
If Shopify says only Title and URL handle are required to update a product, can I omit Option1?
Not always. Some additional columns depend on each other. Refer to the official dependency rules for the fields you're changing.
