SKU Leading Zeros Missing in Excel or CSV? Preserve Identifiers
SKUs and barcodes are identifiers, not quantities. When a spreadsheet interprets 001284 as a number, it may display or export 1284, unintentionally changing the identity of the product. This is especially dangerous for supplier catalogs, scanner-based inventory workflows and mappings to other systems.
Example: why this problem happens
A warehouse uses 0004512 as its stock code, but an Excel export becomes 4512. Both values may appear valid as text; they are not the same identifier.
Diagnose the issue
| Original value | Incorrect transformation | Correct handling |
|---|---|---|
0004512 | 4512 | Keep exact text, including zeros. |
019000223344 | Scientific notation or truncation | Import identifier as text before spreadsheet processing. |
AB-0007 | Automatic formatting or splitting | Keep punctuation exactly as supplied. |
Step-by-step: what to do
- Identify the source-of-truth product identifier. Record its expected character count and examples before editing a file.
- When importing a CSV into Excel or Sheets, specify SKU/barcode columns as text to prevent numerical reformatting.
- If a CSV was already altered, return to the raw supplier export; adding zeros by guesswork can create collisions.
- Test with two rows that differ only by leading zeros. Compare saved CSV text in a plain-text editor.
- Run the duplicate SKU checker after restoring identifiers, but understand it compares the values actually present in the file, not historical values.
Do not use numeric formatting rules, arithmetic, or auto-incrementing on SKU or barcode fields. A “corrected” identifier is not trustworthy unless it matches the supplier or inventory system.

Common question
Can the duplicate SKU tool recover dropped zeros?
No. The checker sees only the bytes in the uploaded file. Restore identifiers from your original export or catalog system.
