A working CSV example: why a line number is not always a spreadsheet row
When a Shopify import reports a problem on a numbered line, the number may point into a CSV field that spans multiple lines. This example lets you compare physical newline-separated text with logical CSV data records without uploading any merchant data.

What the example contains
The downloadable text has four physical lines. The Description field for the Blue T-shirt contains a newline within balanced double quotes.
Title,URL handle,Description,SKU
Blue T-shirt,blue-tee,"First line of description
Second line of description",TEE-1
Canvas tote,canvas-tote,"A simple bag",TOTE-1 | Physical line | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1 | CSV column headers |
| 2 | First product record begins |
| 3 | Continuation of the quoted description, not a new product |
| 4 | Second product record |
Expected parsed result
A compliant CSV parser should return four columns and two product data records. In a spreadsheet view, those data records normally occupy worksheet rows 2 and 3. The displayed description for the first product can contain a line break inside one cell. A raw editor shows four text lines because it counts the embedded newline.
How to reproduce the distinction
- Download the unchanged sample and open it in a plain-text editor that displays line numbers.
- Count four physical lines, noting that the description's opening quote on line 2 closes on line 3.
- Open a separate copy through a spreadsheet application's CSV import option. Confirm the delimiter is comma and the encoding is UTF-8.
- Compare the two logical data records with the physical lines. Do not re-save over your downloaded sample.
- Try the file in our free Shopify CSV checker. It parses the CSV locally in your browser and should recognize two data rows; the example is not designed to test all of Shopify's import requirements.
When the import problem isn't quoting
If the error names a product handle, variant, or missing product title, it may be a semantic issue unrelated to physical newlines. Read our full line-number troubleshooting guide and ignored-line checklist before altering any live product.
