Shopify product CSV vs inventory CSV: choose the right file before importing
These are different workflows. A Shopify product CSV manages product and variant details. A Shopify inventory CSV manages stock quantities across locations. Uploading the wrong template can produce confusing import errors even when the underlying data is correct.
Use the supplier CSV to Shopify converter to prepare a basic product CSV. For an existing export, try the product CSV checker before importing.

Use a product CSV for catalog data
The current Shopify product CSV reference uses headers including Title, URL handle, SKU, Price, Option1 name and Option1 value. For creating a new product, Shopify documents Title as the only generally required column; adding variants also requires the URL handle. Updating existing products requires both URL handle and Title. Other dependent fields can still be needed when options or variants are changed.
Do not assume an import is harmless. Shopify warns that omitting dependent option values during certain variant updates can result in existing variant IDs being removed and recreated. Always keep an original export and test a small import first.
Use an inventory CSV for quantities and locations
Inventory CSVs identify which product and location a quantity belongs to. The inventory specification includes a product handle and location, plus the option values required to locate the right variant. A product data CSV cannot simply be renamed to become an inventory CSV; its columns and expected operation are different.
For multi-location merchants, use the official inventory export as your starting template. Reconcile available quantities against actual stock and review location names before importing.
Common diagnosis workflow
- Identify whether the task is to change products or adjust quantities.
- Export the matching type directly from Shopify.
- Compare your headers and option fields with the exported sample.
- Review product handles, locations and variants separately.
- Test a small set of rows before any large overwrite.
Can our free tools validate both formats?
Not yet. SellerFile Studio's current CSV checker is designed for product imports. It does not verify inventory quantities, location-level inventory semantics, or downstream store changes. Do not treat a clean report here as authorization to overwrite stock records.
