Shopify CSV import errors: what to check first

When a Shopify product CSV import fails, start with the exact error message and a backup copy of the original export. This guide covers frequent issues without risking unnecessary changes to a store.

Have a CSV file ready?

1. Confirm you have a product CSV—not an inventory CSV

These are different formats with different requirements. Shopify's product CSV supports product listings and variants, while the inventory CSV includes location-specific stock data.

2. Use the current column names

Current Shopify product exports use headers such as URL handle, Title, SKU, Price, Option1 name and Option1 value. Older exports may say Handle or Variant SKU, and Shopify retains some backward compatibility.

3. Check the variant dependencies

Do not remove option columns to simplify an existing-product update. Shopify warns that changing or omitting dependent variant fields can remove or recreate existing variant identifiers, affecting connected services.

4. Keep price values numeric

Use decimal values such as 19.99. Currency symbols, free-form text and unexpected separators can prevent a price from being interpreted as intended.

5. Review duplicate SKUs carefully

A repeated SKU isn't always a CSV parsing error, but it can create inventory confusion. Use the duplicate SKU finder to export exact row references before deciding what to change.

6. Never overwrite your products blindly

When Shopify sees matching product handles, its overwrite option may replace existing values. Incomplete related fields can also affect variants. Start with a small test import.
