Shopify variant CSV errors: check Option1, handles and SKUs before import

Some of the riskiest Shopify CSV mistakes involve variants. A file might parse correctly but still identify the wrong product or change the option structure when imported. An error about missing options calls for more than deleting troublesome columns.

Validate the structure first.

Try our free Shopify product CSV checker to flag missing option columns and suspect values. It performs conservative file cleanup, not automatic product or variant restructuring.

How Shopify links variant rows

Shopify's current product import format uses URL handle to identify a product and option columns to define its variants. For example, a shirt may have the same product handle on two rows while its Option1 value differs by size or color. A repeated product handle is therefore not automatically a duplicate product.

URL handleTitleOption1 nameOption1 valueSKU
cotton-teeCotton TeeSizeSmallTEE-S
cotton-teeCotton TeeSizeMediumTEE-M

These example rows are two sizes of one product. They are not duplicate SKUs, and neither row should be discarded just because its handle repeats.

Problem 1: option values omitted during updates

Shopify specifically warns that when variant-related columns such as SKU are updated, related option columns may be required. Omitting Option1 name or Option1 value can result in a default variant being created and existing variants being deleted. This is why we flag missing option fields rather than pretending to repair them automatically.

Problem 2: duplicated variant combinations

If the same handle appears twice with the same option-value combination, examine whether a supplier export was duplicated or whether there is a missing second option. Do not resolve this by inventing a new SKU or option value; review against the source catalog.

Problem 3: duplicate SKUs are not identical to duplicate variants

A SKU is a merchant-defined inventory identifier. Multiple identical SKUs can produce downstream inventory confusion, but a repeated SKU is not always a parsing failure. Likewise, different SKUs can still describe conflicting variant combinations. Use the duplicate SKU finder to see exact line references before deciding whether to make edits.

Problem 4: mixing inventory and product imports

Stock quantities across locations use a different inventory CSV format. For inventory adjustments, see our product CSV vs inventory CSV explanation rather than trying to add inventory locations to a product template.

Safe troubleshooting sequence

  1. Export a backup of the existing products.
  2. Check the exact import error and identify whether this is a new-product import or an update.
  3. Compare handle, SKU and every option value to the original export.
  4. Validate a copy of the file using a conservative checker.
  5. Test a small set of records and verify resulting variant identifiers before a full import.
